Using Google Forms to make on-line quizzes: A tutorial (Part Two: Setting Up Automatic Grading)

February 24, 2014November 29, 2015 Simeon Flowers

This is Part Two of a three part series on making quizzes with Google Forms. Part One focused on how to make the quiz. Part Two (this one) focuses on how to set up automatic grading using Google Spreadsheets. Part three will focus on distribution of the quiz.

If you just want a good automated add on to Sheets, try Flubaroo. However, if you like the DIY approach, read on.

Setting up automatic grading

The simplest way to set up automatic grading for your quiz, is to first take the quiz yourself putting in all the correct answers, and then doing a little work with the Google Spreadsheet where your quiz results are going to be stored. If you have a “name” input option for your student quiz, you can type “Answer Key” to identify your answers later.

Take the Quiz Yourself

After answering the questions correctly, return to your Google Form, and select “View responses” from the menu bar.

Using Google Forms to make on-line quizzes: A tutorial (Part One: Creating the Quiz)

February 21, 2014November 28, 2015 Simeon Flowers

m.quiz.fwGoogle Forms can be used to make mobile friendly reading or listening quizzes for students. You can even have your quizzes set up to grade themselves. This tutorial will cover: How to create a quiz in Google Drive (below); How to set up automatic grading for your quiz; and How to share the quiz with your students.

Creating quizzes in Google Drive is a fairly straight forward process for anyone already using Google services, but I will assume zero experience with Google, and walk through the process step-by-step. Feel free to scroll down to a section which is helpful to you. While the final result works very well in mobile browsers, I recommend making the quiz on a desktop. If you do not yet have a Google Account, you will need to set one up (If you have Gmail, you have a Google account). If you are new to Google services and have questions, you can visit this page.

NOTE: When working in Google Drive, there is no need to save your work. Immediately after making any changes you will see the auto save function at work. Moments later you will see confirmation that your changes have been saved.
